What is a Septic System?

The purpose of a septic system is to cleanse and purify human and household wastewater, then return the purified water back into the usable groundwater. This is done via an underground septic system, which is usually made up of a tank and drain field filtering system (absorption area).

Because this tank will contain all types of waste, it must be water-tight. Most tanks are made from concrete or fiberglass to ensure nothing leaks out.

The tank is where most of the solid waste is treated by enzymes and bacteria, with the effluent leaving the tank mostly made of liquid. This is further treated by the absorption area. The effluent seeps into the soil beneath the drain field, where the enzymes, bacteria and microorganisms within the soil purify the liquid. This liquid eventually reaches a nearby aquifer as clean water.

You should consider yourself lucky to own a septic system. City residents without their own system pay monthly for wastewater treatment. You are getting the benefit of waste treatment on your property for a fraction of the cost!
